rarebit

On our first visit to The Kingham Plough in the Cotswolds, we had rarebit. It was served with cornichons and teeny pickled onions and was one of the nicest things I'd ever eaten. But then cheese on toast is one of my favourite snacks, to have a proper rarebit is nothing short of a luxury.

It gave me the craving for rarebit, but I couldn't be bothered to make it myself. I was aware that Fortnum's sold it in ceramic pots, but it has taken me two and a half years to finally bother to order it. I knew that once I did it had a short shelf life so would need eating promptly or it would be a waste of money. I placed an order on Monday, it arrived on Wednesday.

Couldn't wait to try to recreate the Kingham experience, so dinner for me on Wednesday was rarebit with cornichons and tiny pickled onions. Food of the gods I tell you.

Need not have worried. This is one of the best purchases ever, there is no chance any of it will go to waste. As I write this post I have it browning under the grill, and am not going to say how many times I've scoffed it since Wednesday.
Rarebit on sourdough toast, what a fantastic way to start the day. Also, Violet returns from her week away later on today. Yey. Means I'd better get the laundry up to date because when she returns and empties her case there is going to be A LOT for me to do.

  1. Nice jar, looks like proper pottery! Me thinks it might be adorned prettily with flowers sometimes in the future.

    1. It is and I'm sure it will have flowers in it. The lid just sits on top so each time I get it out of the fridge I feel as if it's going to slip off and smash. I don't envisage the lid staying intact with my clumsiness, so I think using it as a shallow vase is the perfect future use!
