sorting

My hope of a quiet people-free day didn't quite happen yesterday. The chap had a real task with the TV signal, and he's still not happy that he's solved the problem. He was here for almost two and a half hours in the end, and says he will come back as he thinks he knows the issue but didn't have all he needed to solve it. He did manage to get some signal, so I kept the TV on all day which was nice. But as soon as a little rain fell in the evening signal was lost again. It's always been that way in the kitchen, even when the neighbour cuts the grass it messes with the TV. I think it's just one of those things.

When he left I had a couple of hours before the tiler turned up, so I started sorting out the cupboards. I brought in a box of plates and dishes from the garage, washed, and found a home for them. I'm really making good progress with organising. Still have more to do, but a few hours today should get us back to a normal kitchen with everything in its place. As I'm going through things I'm continuing to thin them out. I ditched a Christmas china teacup that I don't think I've ever used and didn't even like very much, a rogue saucer, and a dish I don't care for. I'd kept hold of loads of single cupcake boxes that I just couldn't find a home for, then realised I didn't need them. I'd had them since Violet was in primary school, so right there I knew I wasn't going to use them. Into the recycling bin they went.

A lot of decluttering is common sense. If it hasn't been used, or you've had it for 6 or 7 years and not needed/used it, why on earth hold on to it? It's that 'just in case' way of thinking isn't it. You tell yourself if you get rid of it you're going to regret it the following week when you actually could have used it. But it's not true. The chances are it's another thing cluttering up the place that you never needed.

I'm not chucking out stuff for the sake of it, I'm at a stage in life where I cannot be bothered to hold on to things 'just in case'.

  1. I think you are in the decluttering grove Sadie. Working out how long you've had things and not used them works for me. I'm ashamed of the things that moved here 20 years ago which have only gone when a cupboard has been cleaned/tidied. I'm good with clothes but not so good with linen and kitchen stuff. x

    1. I really am Agatha. I enjoy seeing space appear, rather than seeing cupboards crammed full of stuff. I think as people we just have such attachment to 'things' it can be difficult to get rid of them, even if you don't need it or like it. The teacup was a perfect example for me. I love a cup and saucer, but I don't remember ever using that particular one, and the red poinsettia on it didn't appeal. Yet I'd hung on to it for years.

I'm still purging my wardrobe too. At the weekend I dropped another bundle in the clothes bank. I hope this decluttering version of me continues!

As for the 20+ year things of yours, it takes time. That's all I can say! xx
