harvesting

Things are growing like crazy in the garden. This morning I've been out and picked the first courgette and cucumber. While I was at it I picked the only sweetpeas I could see, and some borage. I keep meaning to add borage to the never ending salads we've been eating, but I always forget until afterwards. Keeping some in a vase is the best idea. I love to see flowers in salads. The sweetcorn gets plumper by the day, I'm keeping my eye on it. As soon as it's ready I'll be cooking it and slathering in melted butter, garlic pepper, and chilli flakes. Can't wait for that.

The hotness continues. 10 a.m and it's already 30 degrees. Bill has decided on another morning of work but promises me he'll be back before midday. Certainly hope so, it's outrageously hot. Brits tend to go on about weather - especially extreme weather - because we simply aren't cut out for it. Heavy snow, blistering sunshine, hurricanes, all of these are not what we expect so when it happens, yes, things come to a standstill and we go on about it. A LOT! Parts of the UK are set to hit 40 degrees today, that is as far from normal and scary.

Later on today I shall remove the remaining post on my old blog. If you wonder why I'm taking time to do that, it's a privacy thing. No point in me saying I'm being cautious in what I share from now on if I leave old posts up sharing and showing so much. They haven't gone forever, I have saved them but I don't intend on making them public again.
Looking at the stats I can see that this blog has now been visited. No one has said hello, but I know the link works and I've been found.

  1. Thank you for the link to your new blog Sadie. I totally understand a level of reticence about how much you share on a public blog and am grateful for the delightful snippets you do share, not to mention the beautiful photographs. I'm pleased the kitchen project has been so successful.
Oh, love the new blog's name by the way. Xx

    1. Thanks Agatha, it's tricky getting the right balance. Sharing is great, but my goodness it comes with a side helping of all manner of opinions!
Violet approved of the new name, so once I heard that I knew it was the right one! Thanks for visiting. x

  2. I spoke to my husband at lunchtime, and he's unable to do part of his job today. It's just too hot for the ingredients for the drugs they were scheduled to make today, and too hot for them to work safely in a sealed sterile unit. I've been at my daughter's for a while helping with the baby. It's just too hot for the poor little thing.

    1. It's scary just how much this heat affects everything, I hadn't considered the medical profession, but now reading your comment I think of course it makes things harder for them. Goodness.
Aw, poor little mite. They really do suffer when it's this hot. x

  3. I'm here to say hello :) Quite a few sweet peas have flowered here in the last week but the actual plants are only half way up the obelisk when usually they're draping over the top by now. Not sure why that is. Love your new blog name and the photo header or your rather gorgeous bed. Things are still on-going here at the moment but I will reply to your e-mail soon. xx

    1. Hello! Our sweetpeas are rubbish, I literally found two and ours aren't as tall as normal either. Maybe it's just a rubbish year for them.
Thank you, that's sweet of you to say that. Violet was all 'why is the photo your bed?' My reply: cos I like it! Fair enough.

Don't worry about the email, I understand! You have a lot going on, and need to focus there. I'm here whenever you're ready. xx

  5. Hello! I'm glad I didn't miss out on the new blog, yours is one of my absolute favorites! I can't believe how hot it is there, we're melting here too. We don't have air conditioning, but Paul dragged one from the basement and put it in our bedroom window, so we can sleep well tonight. I might spend the whole day tomorrow in there, ha, as it'll be 95+ degrees...except I have to take Camille to physical therapy....we didn't grow sweetcorn, but had some local corn last week, it was heavenly.

    1. That's so kind of you, thank you!
This weather is so far from normal it's scary. We expect some hot days, a bit of a heatwave, but when we start having fires on dry grass it's a whole other thing. If this doesn't wake people up to the fact that we have to start doing something for our planet then nothing will.

I hope you got a good nights sleep. With the temperatures you endure you'd have coped well with our recent weather. It's much cooler today, still hot,the house is far too warm, but a cool breeze is blowing so fingers crossed it'll be normal summer again soon.

Fresh sweetcorn is the best! x

Those sweet peas are beautiful. Xx

    1. Hello! Lovely to see you here. ah yes, I think we all have a backlog of stuff we couldn't do, but that's fair enough, it was too hot even to blink, let alone do anything! x
