end of the week
It's hard keeping flowers fresh in the house at the moment. Even with the overnight drop in temperature it still feels very warm indoors. On Monday I took the roses out of vases and changed the water, trimmed the stems, wrapped in brown paper and put them back in the vase. The hope being that the paper would help support and protect them. It sort of worked. I got an extra day out of them once I'd unwrapped them again but the heat had got to them and they soon drooped.
Last night we did the weekly shop, and instead of the several bunches of flowers I usually buy, I bought one bunch of red roses only. Red always seems to be the hardiest of the colours, but how long they last depends on the heat. Instead of shop bought flowers for the table on the landing, I cut a few stems of hydrangea from the garden. Excuse the dust on the table in the photo, I try to keep the house as dust free and tidy as possilbe, but it has been a losing battle and I've finally given up. Looking forward to next week, because I am on a mission to deep clean the house and get it totally back to normal. That includes my mind, which has been completely and utterly taken over with all things kitchen to the extent that I've been having dreams that are very clearly kitchen related. Enough now, it needs to stop.
Although I will just add here that weekly shop has changed already. For the past million weeks I've been buying snacky foods, microwave meals, and things that cook quickly on the camping hob. The freezer was bare, and partly because I'd had a proper sort out and the end of May and then not needing to buy much, the pantry was very empty. Time to stock up to normal levels now, it felt good to be buying 'normal' food once more. Even though Sunday is expected to be another very hot day, I've bought a piece of beef so we can have a much missed roast dinner.

I call this jungle weather. Wet and warm is not a good combination in my opinion. I'm convinced I could live off snacks but there does come a time when I crave a decent meal and a Sunday roast always hits the spot doesn't it. xx
ReplyDeleteIt is too humid. Yesterday (Monday) was cloudy so I thought 'yey, cooler day'. Which it was, sort of. But as I pottered in the kitchen I had sweat running down my back and the house was still stuffy. We need a good storm to clear things properly.
DeleteI love snacks and takeaways, but we have really missed 'real' food. I cooked roast beef and roast potatoes on Sunday even though it was too hot. And it was amazing! Haven't had a homemade roast spud in so long. x
