supermarket thoughts
Thursdays tend to be quite a nice day, even in the midst of makeover madness. Violet doesn't need to be in college until lunchtime, Bill takes the day off and we do the weekly shop. Violet is delighted that she can now come with us to do the shopping. She and Bill go to the cafe upstairs and have coffee and a cake, I get on with loading up the trolley in peace.
The deal is that from time to time they glance down to see if I've appeared. Do they look? Nope. They sit there either engrossed in chat or looking at devices, such was the case here. There they are, huddled in the left hand corner taking no notice whatsoever.
Violet is doing homework on her ipad, Bill is probaby playing jellysplash on his phone.
I end up sending sarcastic text messages, or taking a photo and sending it to them via the gram like a stalker so they know I'm watching them!
It's risky to not notice me once I've declared the shopping done, as I tend to wander around the displays at the front of the store. Yesterday as I took a final look I found the pasta sauce I've been searching for for the past couple of weeks. I'm a little frustrated with Waitrose to be honest, they have got rid of Barts spices in order to corner the market with their own versions. 100% understandable, and makes good business sense, but I really like Barts so now I have to order them online instead of buying them each week. And they're seriously promoting their 'Cook's Ingredients' range, again good business, but how about making sure all the products are in store and available BEFORE you start the heavy promoting? This sauce was one of two jars on the shelf, so I was lucky to get one. I've been trying to get hold of a pot of their cinnamon sugar, looked in all the obvious places but not a sign. And that's just messing with my mind, I'm lured in by the promise of cinnamon sugar but they don't have it on the shelf. Argh! I know I can make my own, but I'm lazy like that. If I wasn't I'd be making my own brown sugar. Saw a lady on Twitter (think it comes from her Tik Tok account but not sure and I'm not on the tikkety tok so can't find out), she said she would never buy brown sugar again, but make her own. How? She mixed granulated sugar with black treacle, microwaved for a short while then mixed it together with her hands. The end result was perfect brown sugar that she put in a jar and said wouldn't clump together like shop bought. I love the idea, I am so tempted, but I did some maths in the shop yesterday and decided it wasn't worth the risk. Initial outlay was around the same as a bag of brown sugar, and I know me. I know I'd mess it up and it wouldn't be brown sugar but a lump of burnt black treacle on a solid lump. I wasn't prepared to waste money trying so bought it already done. Not sure if that's me being lazy or just understanding and accepting my own limits.

I'd stick to buying brown sugar as well Sadie. The combination of sugar, treacle, microwave and hands sounds like a disaster waiting to happen! It's interesting watching what other people do isn't it. At the moment I watch a lot of Korean cake decorating videos. They're beautiful and the amount they make and the fact it's all done by hand fascinates me. x
ReplyDeleteI can see exactly what I'd do, I'd turn the treacle into molten lava, burn my hands, and end up with a rock rather than sugar. Not even going to attempt it!
DeleteOh the Koreans are so talented and patient when it comes to cooking. Their cakes are glorious, even their ideas of a simple dinner are impressive. Makes me feel ashamed, they come up with three courses cooked from scratch, I chuck in some oven chips and fry and egg and think I'm brilliant for doing that!! x
